Pretoria, South Africa – The South African government has introduced a draft policy aimed at developing and regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI), reflecting its commitment to keeping pace with global technological advancements. The policy also seeks to promote the utilization of modern technologies.

Authorities explained that the draft aims to establish a comprehensive framework to ensure the responsible use of AI. It focuses on data protection and privacy, fostering innovation, and supporting the digital economy.

The proposed policy also includes provisions for encouraging scientific research and building local capacity. Furthermore, it outlines ethical standards to govern the use of this technology across various sectors, mitigating potential risks.

This move comes amidst growing global interest in legislation regulating AI. It also comes against a backdrop of warnings about the potential repercussions of uncontrolled AI, as well as the significant opportunities it offers for driving development and improving services.
