London, UK – The UK saw an unprecedented drop in mobile text messaging in 2025, with Britons sending 1.6 billion fewer messages than the previous year.

Official statistics show that the total number of text messages sent in the second quarter of 2025 was approximately 5.4 billion. This represents a decrease of over 20% compared to the same period in 2024.

This decline is mainly due to the rapid shift of users towards instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram. These applications offer additional features such as encryption and privacy.

New regulations from the UK communications regulator Ofcom have also contributed to a reduction in spam messages, resulting in a decrease in the overall annual number of messages.

Experts confirm that this decline reflects a fundamental shift in communication behaviors in Britain, with a continued preference for modern smart applications over traditional messaging.
