  • Expanding the base of founding countries and preparing for the August meetings

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced the appointment of Rear Admiral Abdullah Al-Shehri as Commander of the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition. This appointment completes the coalition’s establishment procedures and operational preparations. Furthermore, it follows the announcement made on July 30, 2026.

A pivotal step to enhance operational readiness and institutional capacity building

The appointment of Abdullah Al-Shehri is a key step that advances the institutional development process and enhances the operational readiness of the coalition. Additionally, it reflects the commitment of the founding nations to completing the leadership structure. This step strengthens its ability to carry out its defensive missions aimed at supporting maritime security. It also protects freedom of navigation, and secures sea lanes and straits. Notably, this includes supporting international trade and global supply chains in accordance with the coalition charter. All actions are taken in accordance with the provisions of international law.

Abdullah Al-Shehri, the coalition commander, will assume command of the joint maritime defense command. He will directly oversee planning and coordination among member states and with other maritime alliances. Moreover, he will be responsible for executing joint activities and missions in accordance with the coalition’s established procedures and documents. This appointment contributes to building the joint command structures and staff. Therefore, it enhances the coalition’s readiness to accommodate member states and their respective capabilities.

Expanding the base of founding countries and preparing for the August meetings

The process of more countries joining the alliance has continued since its formation was announced. Additional countries have already signed the joint declaration. Meanwhile, others are finalizing their national procedures to sign the declaration and the alliance charter. This is paving the way for their formal accession as founding members.

The Alliance affirms that it is an open international entity that welcomes the membership of all countries that align with its objectives and principles. A meeting of planners is scheduled for August 12 and 13, 2026, to finalize the institutional framework. Further countries will sign the documents in preparation for their formal accession. In addition, a supplementary statement will be issued listing the countries that have completed the signing process. This will strengthen the International Maritime Partnership.
