Washington, USA – Massive wildfires have swept through more than a quarter of a million acres in Washington state. This has led to widespread evacuations and power outages affecting tens of thousands of residents in the Spokane area. In response to this natural disaster, Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency across Washington. He also imposed a total fire ban starting Saturday, as intensive efforts continue to contain the flames and protect lives and property.
Large-scale evacuations and emergency measures in Spokane
Local officials confirmed that no injuries or deaths related to the fires have been reported so far, despite the widespread destruction.
In this context, Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown explained that a number of vital and essential facilities in the city have been evacuated. These include water treatment plants, a waste-to-energy plant, and a Veterans Affairs hospital.
Evacuation orders: As of 3:30 p.m. local time, approximately 200 homes had been evacuated in Spokane. Officials anticipate this number will rise given the extent of the affected area.
Power outage: The utility company serving the eastern part of the state reported that approximately 60,000 people were affected by the power outage. This was due to damage to the transportation and power grids.

These devastating fires highlight the worsening wildfire crisis this summer across large swaths of the Pacific Northwest. The region experienced extreme weather conditions last month, including some 34,000 lightning strikes, which ignited a series of scattered fires. Authorities have issued similar evacuation orders in southern British Columbia amid ongoing concerns about the persistent, dry heat wave.
