Nairobi, Kenya – Kenyan police announced that five security personnel were killed in an armed clash with suspected members of the al-Shabaab terrorist group in Mandera County, near the Somali border. This deadly confrontation is part of a series of ongoing attacks in the border region between Kenya and Somalia.

Background of the conflict and the activities of the youth movement

For many years, the al-Shabaab militant group has been waging fierce battles to overthrow the internationally recognized central government in Somalia and establish its rule based on its strict interpretation of Islamic law in this country located in the Horn of Africa region. Its attacks often extend to neighboring countries, most notably Kenya.

Details of the security clash in Mandera County

In an official statement released after the clash, Kenyan police explained that a patrol team from the Special Operations Group (SOG) in the Alungo area engaged in a direct confrontation with al-Shabaab militants in the vicinity of the Wanti Dam. The police added that they are continuing their pursuit of the fleeing militants, particularly after an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a reinforcement team dispatched to the scene, completely destroying an armored vehicle. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the explosion.

Attacks are escalating and targeting infrastructure and civilians.

Al-Shabaab’s frequent attacks in the region target both military forces and civilians. In January, police reported the killing of a local leader and a teacher in the neighboring Garissa district. Mandera district has also seen repeated cross-border incursions in recent years targeting security personnel, as well as communications infrastructure and public transportation, all aimed at terrorizing the population.

In a related incident, the gang attacked a telecommunications tower belonging to the well-known company Safaricom, located within a school compound in Dadaab, Garissa County, last Sunday, clearly indicating the presence of numerous attackers in the area. The attack occurred at dawn in the village of Abakail, near the porous Kenyan-Somali border, causing shock and panic among teachers and local residents.
