Tehran, Iran – Isfahan province in central Iran witnessed heightened security tensions Monday morning following a direct attack on a military base near the city of Nain. Local authorities reported one death and seven injuries. This comes amid escalating military tensions between Tehran and Washington over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Details of the attack and casualties
The deputy governor of Isfahan province for security affairs, Akbar Salehi, stated that “an attack carried out by the US military this morning targeted a military base within the city of Nain, resulting in one death and seven injuries.”
Salehi indicated that the injured received on-site treatment and confirmed that their condition is stable. He also explained that security forces immediately secured the area following the incident.
Initial reports conflicted regarding the target; the Mehr News Agency reported that a public area within the Nain city limits was targeted. On the other hand, the Iranian state broadcaster IRIB confirmed that the military base was the direct target of the strikes.
US Central Command claims responsibility
In response, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a brief statement via its X platform that it had conducted a series of “precision” strikes against Iranian targets.
CENTCOM explained that the operation targeted dozens of sites. The objective was to undermine Tehran’s ability to threaten international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US targets included Iranian air defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone launch pads, and small boats.
The statement noted the use of a variety of military tactics, including fighter jets, naval vessels, and attack drones.
Using new offensive technology
The US Central Command revealed a significant development in its operations, employing for the first time “unidirectional attack maritime drones” alongside conventional aerial drones.
These developments on the ground underscore the widening scope of the military confrontation between the two sides. While Washington attempts to weaken Iranian defense capabilities that impede maritime navigation, Tehran vows to retaliate against these attacks, which it considers a violation of its sovereignty. This leaves the region on edge, anticipating further escalation in the coming hours.
