Berlin, Germany – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz affirmed that the withdrawal of US troops from certain deployment areas in Europe is not linked to personal or political disagreements with former US President Donald Trump. He emphasized that these decisions are primarily based on strategic and military considerations related to troop redeployment and assessments of global threats.
In a press statement, Merz explained that German-American relations remain a cornerstone of the European security system. He stressed that any movements concerning US forces are part of periodic reviews conducted by Washington of its military deployments worldwide. He indicated that this is not the result of tension or fleeting disagreements between political leaders.
He noted that Germany continues its close coordination with the United States within NATO. He also emphasized that the current phase is witnessing significant shifts in the nature of threats, necessitating a repositioning of forces to address new challenges, particularly in light of escalating international crises.
He added that his country recognizes the importance of maintaining its defense partnership with Washington. He pointed out that any changes in the US military presence will not affect either party’s commitment to European security. In fact, these changes may contribute to enhancing the long-term effectiveness of military deployments.
In a related context, Mertz stressed the need for European countries to assume greater responsibility for their own defense. He called for strengthening European military capabilities and increasing defense spending to ensure greater independence without jeopardizing existing alliances.
This statement comes at a time of growing speculation about the future of the American military presence in Europe. This is occurring amidst escalating discussions about sharing the defense burden between the United States and its European allies.
