Nicosia, Cyprus – Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed that the upcoming European Union summit will prioritize engagement with Middle Eastern countries.
This comes amidst the rapid transformations taking place in the region,
and the emergence of shared challenges that are now on the agenda for both sides.
Regional situations, tensions and conflicts
The Cypriot president explained that European leaders are seeking to formulate a more effective approach to the Middle East.
This approach is based on strengthening political dialogue and expanding areas of economic cooperation.
It also focuses on coordination regarding energy, security, and migration.
He noted that the current regional situation, with its tensions and conflicts,
makes it essential to build continuous channels of communication with the countries of the region.
This contributes to containing crises and mitigating their impact on European security.
Supporting stability and development
The Cypriot president also noted that the summit will discuss ways to support stability and development in Middle Eastern countries,
with a focus on long-term partnerships, particularly in the areas of renewable energy and infrastructure,
thereby strengthening the shared interests of both sides.
These moves come at a time when the European Union is seeking to reposition itself
on the international stage by expanding its strategic partnerships,
amidst increasing competition from other international powers for influence in the region.
