Washington, DC – Relations between the United States and Iran stand at a highly sensitive juncture, teetering between the possibility of détente and a slide toward wider confrontation. This comes amidst escalating regional tensions and stalled diplomatic efforts, opening the door to several scenarios that will shape the next phase.

The first scenario involves a gradual resumption of negotiations through international or regional mediation. These efforts could lead to partial understandings that mitigate the escalation, especially if both sides recognize the political, economic, and security costs of a direct confrontation.

The second scenario is the continuation of the current state of “neither war nor agreement,” which is the prevailing situation. US pressure and sanctions continue, met with calculated Iranian actions, without reaching a direct clash. Nevertheless, the tension remains within manageable limits.

The third scenario opens the door to a limited escalation through indirect confrontations in spheres of influence, such as the Gulf, or through regional proxies. This is a pattern the region has witnessed repeatedly, and it could recur more intensely if the mutual provocations continue.

The fourth scenario, the most dangerous, remains linked to the possibility of a direct military confrontation resulting from a miscalculation or an uncontrolled escalation. This is especially true given the presence of both sides’ military forces in close proximity, which could transform any limited friction into a wider conflict.

It is estimated that the decision-making process in both capitals remains governed by complex calculations, where domestic politics intertwine with strategic interests. The most significant factor, however, remains the lack of trust, which hinders any genuine breakthrough in de-escalation.

Given this equation, the region appears to be at a crossroads, where any sudden development could completely reshape the landscape. It is a choice between an opportunity to contain the crisis or a slide into a confrontation with unpredictable consequences.
