Moscow, Russia – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused European countries of deliberately trying to sow discord between Russia and the United States.
He also asserted that some European capitals are attempting to thwart any potential path to dialogue or de-escalation between the two superpowers.
In a press statement, Lavrov said, “There are European parties who are displeased with the prospect of improved Russian-American relations
because their policies over the past years have been based on a logic of escalation and continued confrontation”.
He considered these parties to be playing a negative role on the international stage.
The Russian minister indicated that Moscow is open to dialogue with Washington if it is based on mutual respect and consideration of shared interests.
Trust gap between Moscow and Europe
He also warned that the intervention of third parties threatens global stability.
Such intervention, he added, is reverting international relations to a Cold War-era atmosphere.
Lavrov’s remarks come amid escalating tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine, economic sanctions,
and NATO’s eastward expansion. This has deepened the trust deficit between Moscow and Western capitals.
Analysts believe Lavrov’s comments reflect Russian concern over European attempts to maintain international polarization.
Furthermore, these attempts aim to prevent any agreements that could reshape relations between Moscow and Washington.
This is happening at a time when the international system is undergoing rapid transformations and an open struggle for influence.
