Vienna, Austria – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that nuclear power plants in Ukraine have temporarily reduced their output following a technical malfunction in the electricity grid that affected the country’s power supply.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated in an official statement that the problem
with the electricity grid necessitated precautionary measures, including a reduction in nuclear power production.
He emphasized that this step was part of standard technical procedures to ensure grid stability and the safety of nuclear facilities.
Risks to nuclear energy
Grossi explained that the Chernobyl plant briefly lost all external power sources before the situation was brought under control.
He noted that the incident did not pose any direct risks to nuclear safety and that the safety systems functioned as expected.
He added that the agency is continuously monitoring developments in coordination with the Ukrainian authorities.
Ukraine relies heavily on nuclear power to meet a significant portion of its electricity needs,
particularly given the challenges facing the energy sector due to the security situation and ongoing strain on infrastructure.
Any disruptions to the electricity grid are a source of concern for both domestic and international authorities,
given the importance of maintaining stable supplies and the safety of nuclear facilities.
temporary precautionary measure
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that its teams are closely monitoring the situation
and are in constant contact with the relevant authorities in Ukraine to assess
the impact of the technical malfunction and address its consequences.
The IAEA also emphasized that production reductions are typically used as a temporary precautionary measure
and do not necessarily indicate an immediate threat.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities have not yet announced when the nuclear power plants will return to full operational capacity,
stating only that technical assessments are underway to address the malfunction in the electrical grid and ensure its stability.
These developments come at a time when the Ukrainian energy sector is facing increasing pressure,
highlighting the importance of international technical support and ongoing coordination
with the IAEA to maintain the highest standards of nuclear safety and security.
