Moscow, Russia – Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov stated that the ongoing developments in both Venezuela and Iran necessitate continued analysis of the security situation by the Russian and Chinese defense ministries. As a result, they must adopt appropriate measures in light of regional and international developments.

Belousov’s remarks followed talks with his Chinese counterpart in Moscow. These discussions addressed a number of issues of mutual interest. The main topics were global security challenges, tensions in various parts of the world, and their impact on international stability.

Implications for regional balances

The Russian Defense Minister emphasized that close coordination between Moscow and Beijing has become essential given the rapid pace of international events. Furthermore, he noted the interconnectedness of crises. He explained that the political and security developments in Venezuela and Iran have direct repercussions on regional balances. Therefore, they require a constant assessment of the associated risks and opportunities.

Belousov added that Russia and China attach particular importance to the exchange of military information and expertise. In addition, they focus on strengthening mechanisms for regular consultations. This contributes to a deeper understanding of the nature of current security challenges and enhances the two countries’ ability to address them effectively. He also stressed that this cooperation is part of the effort to maintain global stability, respect the sovereignty of states, and reject foreign interference.

Disagreements between major powers

The Russian minister did not provide further details on the nature of the measures that Moscow and Beijing might take. However, he indicated that the two countries’ defense ministries would continue to closely monitor developments and coordinate on issues directly affecting international security.

These statements come at a time of escalating global tensions on a number of critical issues. This is amid growing disagreements between major powers over security, energy, and political influence. The Russian position reflects a reaffirmation of the strength of its strategic partnership with China. It also indicates its growing role in addressing international issues from a shared perspective.

Russian-Chinese cooperation is seen as a key element in reshaping the international order. Both countries seek to strengthen multipolarity and counter what they describe as policies of hegemony and unilateral decision-making on the world stage.
