Copenhagen, Denmark – Greenland welcomed continued European support on Sunday. The island reaffirmed its commitment to cooperation with its European partners,

despite threats from US President Donald Trump to impose punitive tariffs on several European countries over the island.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The Greenlandic government stated that the supportive European stances reflect respect

for sovereignty and an understanding of the sensitivity of the current situation.

This statement comes at a time of escalating political tensions in the region.Last week, France, Germany, and Britain,

along with other European countries, deployed small groups of troops to Greenland at Denmark’s request.

This move was described as aimed at reassuring the island and strengthening defense cooperation.

dangerous downward spiral

These moves angered the US president, who threatened to impose tariffs on eight European NATO members until the US agreed to purchase the island.

This move was met with widespread European rejection.European leaders, in statements issued on Saturday,

warned against entering a “dangerous downward spiral” due to the use of tariffs as a political pressure tactic.

They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Greenland and respecting Danish sovereignty.

EU ambassadors are scheduled to meet today to discuss how to respond to the US threats.

Also, they plan to coordinate a unified position that protects European interests and avoids a trade escalation with Washington.

Greenland and exceptional times

In this context, Naja Natanielsen, Greenland’s Minister for Business, Energy and Minerals, stated that the island is going through “extraordinary times that demand not only respect,

but also a great deal of courage,” emphasizing the importance of international solidarity in the face of political and economic pressures.

These developments come amidst growing interest in Greenland due to its strategic location and natural resources.

The island is becoming a focal point of escalating international competition among major powers.

Meanwhile, Europe repeatedly affirms its support for stability and respect for international law.
