Moscow, Russia – Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, denied speculation by US President Donald Trump about a new phone call between him and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Peskov noted that the last conversation between the Russian and American presidents took place on October 16th. He denied that Putin and Trump had spoken by phone again since that date, according to RIA Novosti.
US President Donald Trump himself had fueled the rumors. In response to journalists’ questions about his recent contact with the Russian president, Trump stated that “it happened.” However, he did not provide details about the timing or nature of the conversation.
Temporary Suspension and Resumption of Communications
This denial came in the context of previous reports about the suspension of dialogue between the two sides. On November 19, the Russian ambassador to Washington, Alexander Darchev, confirmed that dialogue between the Russian and American sides had been temporarily suspended. However, he stressed that the suspension was not complete. He indicated that “contacts are continuing at various levels, which requires patience and perseverance.”
Shortly after this statement, contacts intensified significantly at other levels. US Special Presidential Envoy Steven Witkopf and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner visited Russia. US officials discussed Washington’s peace plan for Ukraine with Russian authorities.
