Tunis – Tunisian President Kais Saied issued a presidential pardon on Tuesday, releasing 2,014 prisoners. This coincided with the 15th anniversary of the start of the Tunisian revolution, which falls on December 17th each year.
Saied directed the conditional release of an additional 674 prisoners, in accordance with the laws and procedures in force.
This decision falls within the constitutional powers vested in the President of the Republic. It carries symbolic and humanitarian weight, coinciding with the commemoration of the revolution. It also aims to alleviate overcrowding in prisons. Furthermore, the decision contributes to the reintegration of released prisoners into society, while upholding the requirements of justice and maintaining public order.
Tunisia will commemorate on Wednesday the fifteenth anniversary of the outbreak of the revolution, which began in the state of Sidi Bouzid on December 17, 2010. It led to major political changes in the country.
