Cairo, Egypt – British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said she warned Israel against any steps to annex the West Bank in response to London’s recognition of a Palestinian state, stressing that recognition is the best way to ensure the security of both Palestinians and Israelis.

Highlights
  • Expanding international momentum
  • Israeli and American criticism
  • Palestinian welcome and fear of escalation

Expanding international momentum

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the decision to recognize Israel, placing Britain among a group of Western nations that includes Canada, Australia, and Portugal. France and Belgium are preparing to take similar steps at the United Nations, reflecting growing international pressure to advance the two-state solution.

Israeli and American criticism

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the move as a “reward for terrorism,” while Washington considered it a “diplomatic gift to Hamas.” However, London emphasized that the recognition excludes any role for Hamas and supports peace.

Palestinian welcome and fear of escalation

The Palestinian Authority welcomed the British decision, considering it a historic step paving the way for an independent Palestinian state. In contrast, extremist Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for the annexation of the West Bank and the dismantling of the PA.

Amidst the Gaza war and escalating famine, the recognition comes as Israel’s war on Gaza continues for nearly two years, leaving more than 65,000 dead, amid UN accusations of genocide and international organizations declaring a famine in the Strip.
