Moscow, Russia — In a sharp diplomatic escalation reflecting the seriousness of the situation on the ground, the Russian Foreign Ministry described the recent missile strike targeting the vicinity of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran as a “crime,” warning of potentially catastrophic consequences from targeting sensitive facilities.

Zakharova: Growing concern and condemnation

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, strongly condemned the missile attack that occurred on April 4.

In statements reported by Russian media, she said:
Russia is receiving with “bitterness and growing concern” reports of the renewed targeting of the Bushehr area, adding that authorities are currently reviewing all available information.

She stressed that Moscow “strongly condemns this crime that has claimed lives.”

Official condolences

Zakharova also extended official condolences over the death of a security personnel member responsible for protecting the facility, who was killed in what she described as a “treacherous attack.”

Rosatom: Urgent international contacts and “collective anxiety”

For his part, the CEO of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, revealed what he described as a state of “diplomatic alarm” across the international community.

He noted that the company’s offices are receiving continuous messages of concern from international partners.

Likhachev said that “everyone is deeply worried about this dangerous trend of escalation that directly affects the safety of nuclear reactors.”

IAEA: A “red line” must not be crossed

In the same context, the International Atomic Energy Agency issued a firm statement describing attacks on nuclear energy sites as “completely unacceptable.”

The agency warned that even targeting areas surrounding reactors could threaten critical safety equipment, potentially leading to an uncontrollable radioactive leak.

Attack outcome: Reactor intact, guard killed

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran confirmed that a projectile landed within the security perimeter of the facility.

The incident resulted in the death of one security guard, while the reactor body and main facilities were not structurally damaged.

However, officials stressed that the site remains under direct threat.

Escalation implications

Observers believe that the rapid escalation signals a dangerous shift, where even nuclear infrastructure is becoming part of indirect targeting strategies.

They warn that continued attacks of this nature could significantly raise the risk of a broader regional crisis.

Fears of a potential nuclear disaster

Experts caution that any miscalculation or further escalation could trigger a large-scale nuclear incident.

Such a scenario would not only impact Iran, but could also have serious consequences for neighboring regions and the wider international community.
