WASHINGTON, United States – The U.S. Treasury Department is considering issuing a one-dollar coin featuring President Donald Trump, officials announced.
This is on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the country’s independence.
Treasury Secretary Scott Besant re-shared a post by Treasury Secretary Brandon Beach containing preliminary designs for this coin.
Beach posted drafts of the initial designs on the X platform, accompanied by a comment that he “looks forward to sharing more of them soon, once the US government shutdown ends”.
One design shows an image of Trump on the front side of the coin.
While the second face bears another picture of him raising his fist in front of an American flag with the phrase “Fight, fight, fight”.
This photo was taken after an assassination attempt on him last year during his election campaign.
When asked about the currency, a Treasury Department spokesman criticized what he described as “the forced shutdown imposed by the far left on our government”.
He then added: “This first draft clearly reflects the solid spirit of our country and our democracy, even in the face of enormous obstacles”.
In 2020, Congress passed legislation signed by Trump during his first term allowing the Treasury Department to issue one-dollar coins “with symbolic designs to celebrate the fifty-fifth centenary of the United States”.
The Treasury Department can mint and issue coins within a one-year period beginning in January 2026.
The US Congress imposes restrictions on the Treasury Department’s use of images of living people in coin designs.
It is unclear whether Trump’s coin designs will face obstacles under current laws.
