London, UK – The British Labour Party has selected Sagal Abdi-Wali—a former Somali refugee who arrived in the UK as a child in the early 1990s—as its candidate for the by-election in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency. Abdi-Wali was set to contest the seat previously held by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Abdi Wali, who currently chairs the Camden Council, was selected on Wednesday from a shortlist of three candidates. She will contest the election scheduled for October 8. Notably, she is a local ally of Starmer and grew up in the same area.
Anticipated competition with the Green Party
Abdi-Wali is expected to face stiff competition from Green Party leader Zack Polanski, who is seeking to rally support as the Greens aim to wrest the seat from Labour. They are also looking to capitalize on shifts within the left-wing electorate.
The Green Party finished third in the constituency during the 2024 election, securing 10.4% of the vote. In contrast, the pro-Gaza independent candidate Andrew Feinstein received around 19%, while Starmer garnered nearly half of the votes in that election.
A political test for the Labour leadership.
Observers believe the by-election result could carry broader political implications. A victory for the Green Party would deal a blow to its leadership; conversely, if the Labour Party retains the seat, it could strengthen its position against the rise of the Greens among left-wing voters.
This contest follows Starmer’s announcement that he is stepping down from his parliamentary seat. In this context, the Green Party is focusing its anticipated campaign on the cost of living, housing, and Gaza. The party aims to attract voters who have turned away from the Labour Party.
