Salalah, Sultanate of Oman – The Dhofar Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman hosted the 64th meeting of the Arab Towns Organization, with the participation of a number of officials and representatives of Arab cities and municipalities. The meeting aimed to enhance cooperation and exchange expertise in urban development. Discussions focused on a range of issues related to the development of Arab cities and improving the efficiency of services provided to residents, as well as mechanisms to support urban projects and strengthen coordination between cities and local authorities in member states.
Participants discussed the importance of digital transformation in city management, leveraging modern technologies and data to improve services and enhance infrastructure efficiency, keeping pace with the rapid developments in the global urban management sector. Sustainability was also a key topic of discussion, particularly given the challenges facing Arab cities due to population growth and urban expansion, and the need to balance economic development with environmental and natural resource conservation.
The meeting also discussed ways to enhance sustainable urban transport and develop urban mobility options, contributing to reducing congestion, improving quality of life, and promoting environmentally friendly solutions. The meeting in Dhofar is part of the Arab Towns Organization’s program aimed at expanding cooperation among Arab cities, exchanging successful experiences in urban planning and facilities and services management, and leveraging the accumulated expertise of member cities.
The organization emphasizes the importance of continued Arab coordination on urban issues, particularly in light of the changes brought about by modern technology and the shift towards smart cities, as well as the environmental and economic challenges that require joint and sustainable solutions. The selection of Dhofar Governorate to host the meeting reflects its prominent role in hosting regional events and conferences, as well as its experience in urban, tourism, and environmental development.
