Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces had carried out a series of attacks targeting oil and military facilities inside Russian territory. This comes as part of operations that Kyiv says are aimed at weakening Moscow’s logistical and military capabilities. Zelensky stated that Ukrainian forces successfully targeted three oil refineries in Russia, along with a site that Kyiv claims is used to store attack drones. He added that these strikes are part of Ukraine’s efforts to disrupt the supply and funding sources supporting Russian military operations.
He added that targeting energy sector facilities is part of a broader military strategy aimed at reducing Russia’s ability to produce and supply fuel to its forces. It also aims to put pressure on infrastructure directly or indirectly linked to the war effort. The Ukrainian president noted that the attacks were carried out using long-range capabilities developed by Ukraine. He also affirmed that his country will continue to target sites it considers connected to Russian military operations.
These developments come at a time when the Russian-Ukrainian war is witnessing a mutual escalation in the use of drones and long-range missiles. Both sides are also intensifying attacks on energy facilities and military infrastructure. Moscow repeatedly accuses Kyiv of targeting civilian and energy facilities inside Russian territory. In turn, Ukraine maintains that its operations target sites linked to Russian military capabilities. It considers striking fuel and supply facilities part of its efforts to limit Moscow’s ability to continue the war.
The Russian oil sector is a key battleground in the economic confrontation linked to the war. Refineries and energy storage and transportation facilities have been targeted in previous attacks, in some cases halting or reducing production and refining operations. The Ukrainian announcement comes as Kyiv continues to pressure Russia through long-range attacks. This coincides with ongoing fighting along the front lines and international efforts to push both sides toward a ceasefire.
