Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump has officially ordered the resumption of construction work on the new White House helicopter landing pad.
This comes after weeks of construction, following his expressed dissatisfaction with its final appearance,
which he described as “sloping.” This was revealed by prominent US media outlets.
Presidential discontent and re-engineering
The Washington Post, citing two sources familiar with the project,
reported that President Trump was far from satisfied with the current design of the helipad.
Construction began last June. Trump insists that the helipad be perfectly level with the horizon.
For this reason, engineering teams may be required to dismantle large sections of the existing structure.
He may also request the resurfacing of significant portions of the White House’s South Lawn.
While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines do not require a helipad to be 100% horizontal,
they do stipulate that its surface must be level enough to allow for effective rainwater drainage.
Administrative justifications and private funding
Commenting on the matter, White House spokesman Davis Engel said that the presidential residence
“was in dire need of a suitable helipad that would allow the president to land in complete safety,
while at the same time protecting the South Lawn grass from damage resulting from the exhaust
and enormous air pressure generated by the famous presidential helicopter (Marine One).”
In turn, an official in the US administration explained that these modifications
and development work fall within an ongoing project.
This project aims to modernize the presidential headquarters facilities
in accordance with modern standards and safety requirements.
But he refused to reveal the amount of additional financial costs that might result
from the decision to re-implement the project.
It is noteworthy that the basic project costs of $6 million are fully financed
by Sikorsky Aircraft (a subsidiary of the defense industry giant Lockheed Martin).
Note that Sikorsky is the manufacturer of the VH-92A Patriot presidential helicopters.
Extensive renovations to the White House
President Trump had previously stated last month that he wanted a high-end,
aesthetically pleasing helipad, provided the manufacturer covered the costs.
He indicated that it would not be a simple concrete platform,
but would feature the official White House seal along with a mosaic and granite eagle.
The helipad project is the latest in a long line of renovations and modernizations spearheaded
by Trump at the presidential complex in Washington.
These projects have included the construction of a massive new ballroom,
which necessitated the demolition of the East Wing.
They have also included decorative alterations, such as adding gold accents
and embellishments to the corridor leading to the West Wing.
The presidential renovations have also included a redesign of the iconic Rose Garden.
Furthermore, the Presidential Walk of Fame was created, displaying commemorative
photos of prominent former US presidents along with accompanying captions.
