Kabul, Afghanistan – The UN revealed that nearly 400 civilians were killed or injured in Afghanistan during the past three months, as a result of escalating violence and armed clashes in border areas,
in a new indication of the continued security challenges facing the country
despite the slowdown in the pace of conflict in some areas.
Repercussions of security tensions
The UN report explained that the casualties resulted from cross-border shelling and clashes, as well as explosions
and violence related to local conflicts, noting that civilians continue to bear the brunt of the security tensions.
The international organization stressed that the protection of civilians must remain a top priority, calling on all parties to adhere
to international humanitarian law and take urgent measures to avoid targeting populated areas,
de-escalate the situation, and prevent further loss of life.
Alleviating the suffering of the population
The UN also stressed the need to ensure humanitarian aid reaches those affected,
given the continuing difficult humanitarian conditions in large areas of Afghanistan,
calling on the international community to continue supporting efforts
to promote stability and alleviate the suffering of the population.
