U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces, in cooperation with the Saudi Armed Forces, conducted precision airstrikes targeting sites, weapons depots, and logistical facilities belonging to Iranian-backed elements in eastern Iraq.CENTCOM explained that these operations were a direct response to a series of drone attacks targeting U.S. forces and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, noting that these elements were operating under the direction of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Details of the joint military operation
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the strikes were carried out with the participation of US and Saudi fighter jets, describing them as a “strong response” to more than 30 drone attacks launched by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) within a 72-hour period. The command also indicated that the attacks targeting US forces failed to achieve their objectives thanks to the successful interception of these attacks. Furthermore, the data revealed that more than 600 attempted attacks targeting US citizens and facilities were detected between February and April 2026, which Washington attributed to Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.
Targeting Popular Mobilization Forces headquarters
On the ground, Iraqi media reported early Wednesday that Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) headquarters and sites in three southern provinces (Basra, Wasit, and Karbala) were targeted by airstrikes, including weapons depots and logistical support facilities. However, no official comment has yet been issued by Iraqi authorities regarding the attacks announced by the US Central Command.
