  • French Evacuations and Record European Fire Season

Madrid – The Spanish government declared a national state of emergency on Friday for the first time due to escalating wildfires. Flames spread across multiple regions and forced the evacuation of over 10,000 people from mountainous towns west of Madrid. The move came as both Madrid and Paris requested emergency assistance from the European Union. This assistance is aimed to help contain fires fueled by intense heatwaves and strong winds.

National Emergency Mobilization and Containment Efforts

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed that the national emergency declaration aims to maximize coordination among response agencies. He noted that firefighting crews are working to prevent three massive blazes in the region and neighboring Ávila province from merging. If the fires merge, it would severely heighten risks near densely populated residential areas and summer homes.

Authorities deployed over 270 emergency responders alongside 40 ground units and specialized Military Emergency Units (UME). These resources are working to control the spreading fires driven by extreme weather conditions.

French Evacuations and Record European Fire Season

In France, authorities ordered the complete evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula along the Atlantic coast as smoke and flames threatened residential areas. Officials reported that approximately 63,000 people were evacuated. Many were transported to safety via boats. Meanwhile, Paris also formally requested EU civil protection support.

Spanish Minister for Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen stated that Spain has recorded over 29 major wildfires since the beginning of the year. These fires have burned five times more land area compared to the same period in 2025. Environmental authorities continue efforts to contain the blazes. Meanwhile, warnings state that severe weather conditions will persist in the coming days.

Spain’s unprecedented national emergency declaration highlights the intensifying impact of climate-driven disasters across Europe, underscoring the urgent need for reinforced EU-wide disaster response frameworks.
