Brussels – The European Union has introduced a new package of sanctions targeting a key figure in a cyber group accused of enabling the Iranian government to suppress information and enforce digital surveillance on its citizens, expanding European pressure on Tehran over human rights abuses.
Targeting Digital Surveillance and Online Control
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that the new sanctions target a prominent individual within a cyber entity that actively facilitated the Iranian authorities’ restrictions on information flow while reinforcing digital tracking and censorship tools used against civilians.
Kallas emphasized that these measures form part of a broader European Union framework aimed at penalizing individuals and entities directly implicated in human rights violations, specifically those undermining freedom of expression and digital rights across Iran.
Holding Iranian Officials Accountable Amid Rising Tensions
The High Representative affirmed that the European Union will continue holding those responsible for violations against Iranian citizens accountable, warning that escalating state repression will meet firm European responses.
Kallas added that Brussels is closely monitoring internal developments in Iran and will deploy available diplomatic and legal instruments to impose further targeted sanctions. The move comes amid heightened friction in EU-Iran relations spanning human rights records, nuclear developments, and regional security concerns.
