Ankara, Turkey – More than ten Russian tourists, including children, suffered severe food poisoning while staying at a five-star resort in the Turkish city of Alanya. The Russian news channel SHOT reported that the incident has caused concern, especially given initial indications that the source of the contamination was the swimming pool water. Other guests reported serious health violations at the hotel, including a cockroach infestation, poor hygiene in the kitchenware, and plumbing problems.

Frequent health incidents

This incident has intensified criticism of some tourist establishments in Turkey, especially coming just days after a similar incident in Bodrum. In the previous incident, mass food poisoning necessitated the hospitalization of 25 Turkish tourists.

These successive incidents raise questions about health and safety standards in resorts, particularly given their high occupancy rates during the peak summer season.

The importance of the Russian market to the Turkish tourism sector

These incidents are particularly sensitive given the strategic importance of the Russian market. Turkey’s share of Russian tourism sales increased by 3.4% in April 2026 compared to the previous year, accounting for approximately 18.5% of total Russian outbound tourism. Furthermore, Russian tourists are considered a cornerstone of the Turkish tourism sector, relied upon to offset declining demand from European markets and ensure the sustainability of financial flows amidst regional instability.

Challenges of the 2026 tourist season

Turkey’s tourism sector is facing increasing pressure this year as it aims to achieve ambitious revenue targets of $68 billion.

With geopolitical conflicts potentially restricting air travel and altering the global landscape of preferred destinations, officials and industry professionals are closely monitoring these incidents. They fear that such events could damage Turkey’s reputation as a tourist destination.

Experts estimate that the stability of tourist destinations is the crucial factor in attracting global tourism; therefore, any decline in safety and quality standards could lead tourists to redirect their trips to competing destinations in the Mediterranean basin. The biggest challenge facing Turkish authorities remains enforcing strict quality standards in major resorts to ensure that targeted tourism revenues are not negatively impacted by negligence in basic services.
