Washington, DC – The proposal to replace President Donald Trump’s image on US currency has sparked widespread political and legal controversy. Legal and historical experts have emphasized that implementing such a move would require complex legislative procedures and cannot be done by a unilateral presidential decision.

Experts explained to NPR that current federal law prohibits placing the image of any living person on US currency. This would render Trump’s appearance on the dollar at this time illegal.

Experts pointed out that any change to the design of paper or metal currency requires congressional approval and legislative amendments. Coordination with the U.S. Treasury and the relevant currency issuing authorities is also necessary. They emphasized that the matter is not solely at the discretion of the president or the executive branch.

U.S. currency currently features portraits of several presidents and historical figures who have left a significant mark on U.S. history, most notably George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Benjamin Franklin. These designs were adopted according to laws and procedures that have been in place for decades.

This debate coincides with Trump’s continued strong presence on the American political scene. Discussions have resurfaced regarding several proposals put forward by his supporters, while experts maintain that any change to the dollar’s design will remain contingent on the will of Congress and amendments to existing laws. It will not be achieved through a unilateral political or executive decision.
