Amman, Jordan – As part of its ongoing efforts to combat the rise in cybercrime, Jordan’s Public Security Directorate announced the dismantling of a fraud network that promoted fake sales through social media platforms. The Directorate’s media spokesperson confirmed that the Cybercrime Unit had recently received dozens of complaints from citizens who fell victim to organized scams. These scams used offers of “mobile phone installment plans” to lure victims.
recurring criminal pattern
The media spokesman explained that preliminary investigations revealed that unknown fraudsters created fake pages on social networking sites. They published attractive advertisements promoting the sale of modern mobile devices at competitive prices and an easy installment system.
Once victims contacted these pages and agreed on the purchase, the scammers would request an immediate financial transfer via e-wallets as a down payment or reservation fee. After receiving the money, the perpetrators would cut off all means of communication with the victims. They also close fake pages to hide from view.
Successful security strike
Upon receiving the reports, the technical teams in the Cybercrime Unit immediately began a thorough investigation and analysis of the financial transfers and digital links used. These technical efforts led to the identification of the main suspect in these fraud cases. A specialized security force apprehended him, and official investigations were initiated in preparation for referring him to the judiciary to face justice.
A call for caution and vigilance
In this context, the Cybercrime Unit issued a strong warning to citizens, urging them to exercise extreme caution when dealing with unverified or unknown business pages. The unit also emphasized the following points to avoid falling victim to fraud: do not interact with pages impersonating businesses without verifying their legitimacy through their official channels.
Consumers are advised to refrain from making any financial transfers before receiving the goods and verifying their conformity to the agreed-upon specifications. Furthermore, legal and secure methods must be followed in all buying and selling transactions to guarantee the rights of both the buyer and the seller. The Public Security Directorate affirmed that it continues to monitor all suspicious online activities. Moreover, it will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who attempts to exploit citizens or compromise their financial security in the digital sphere.
