Doha, Qatar – Funeral prayers were held for the late Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani at the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque in Doha, the Qatari capital.
The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, led the mourners.
This followed the announcement by the Amiri Diwan of the death of the late Emir at the age of 74.
Funeral and burial at Lusail Cemetery
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani led the funeral procession for his father, before the late Emir was laid to rest in Lusail Cemetery.
Members of the ruling family, senior officials, and other dignitaries were in attendance.
The Amiri Diwan had earlier announced the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani on the morning of July 12,
2026, and indicated that the funeral and burial would take place that same day.
Four days of mourning and receiving condolences
The Amiri Diwan announced a four-day period of national mourning throughout Qatar,
beginning today, following the death of the Father Emir.
It also stated that Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will receive condolences from heads of state,
members of the ruling family, dignitaries, and citizens at Lusail Palace on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
A remarkable journey in the history of Qatar
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was one of the most prominent leaders under
whose rule Qatar witnessed extensive political, economic, and developmental transformations.
He led the country for many years before handing over power to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in 2013.
The announcement of his death sparked a wave of condolences both within Qatar and abroad.
Official authorities will continue to organize mourning ceremonies
and receive official delegations offering their condolences in the coming days.
