Moscow, Russia – The Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump agreed, during a phone call earlier this week, to continue their communication in the near future.
This move strengthens expectations of further talks during or after the upcoming NATO summit in Türkiye.
Agreement to continue communication
The Kremlin stated that the two presidents agreed to maintain direct communication channels, without disclosing a specific date or agenda for the next conversation.
However, the timing suggests the possibility of a new call coinciding with the NATO summit meetings.
This comes amid intensified international efforts to advance a political settlement to the Ukrainian crisis.
Diplomatic moves regarding Ukraine
These developments coincide with an announcement by a senior US official that President Trump intends to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday in Turkey.
This meeting will take place on the sidelines of the NATO summit to discuss ways to launch a new effort to end the war in Ukraine.
According to the US official, Washington seeks to capitalize on the current situation to advance negotiation efforts,
given what the US administration describes as a slowdown in military progress on the battlefronts.
Anticipation of the NATO summit results
The international community is awaiting the outcome of the bilateral meetings and anticipated communications between the leaders participating in the NATO summit.
There are expectations that the coming days will witness intense diplomatic activity concerning the war in Ukraine and the future of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
The communications between Putin and Trump are attracting considerable attention, as some consider them a potential avenue for creating the conditions necessary to resume political efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.
