Geneva, Switzerland – Jamal Al Mashrakh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, participated in the urgent discussion session held by the Human Rights Council on humanitarian developments in the city of El Obeid and its surrounding areas, in the Republic of Sudan.

Al-Mashrakh stressed that the UAE is following with great interest the worrying briefings regarding the worsening humanitarian crisis in the city. Stressing that the ongoing escalation confirms that there is no military solution to this conflict. The only way is an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and an urgent humanitarian truce.

protection of civilians

He renewed the UAE’s condemnation, in the strongest terms, of all violations of international law committed by both parties to the conflict throughout Sudan. Including targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, stressing the need to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law.

Al-Mashrakh also called for expanding the scope of the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations to include the entire territory of Sudan. As a necessary measure to reduce hostilities and enhance the protection of civilians. Stressing the importance of ensuring safe, rapid, and unhindered access for humanitarian aid to all affected areas.

Supporting a political process in Sudan

Al-Mashrakh welcomed the outcomes of the Berlin Conference, affirming the UAE’s support as a member of the Quartet concerned with Sudan. For efforts aimed at enhancing the participation of Sudanese civilian components. Appreciating at the same time the continuing efforts made by the five-member group to advance the civil political path.

At the conclusion of the statement, Jamal Al-Mashrakh stressed that the primary goal of the international community must remain to support a comprehensive political process led by civilians, independent of both parties to the conflict and extremist groups. In a way that meets the aspirations of the brotherly Sudanese people for security, stability, peace, and prosperity.
