Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine has called on its European Union partners to allocate €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility funds to support its military needs.
It considers the next six to nine months a crucial opportunity to strengthen its position on the battlefield.
Request for additional military funding
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, in a letter seen by Reuters,
said Kyiv is requesting that €6.6 billion available under the European Peace Facility be allocated to military aid.
This is intended to have a rapid impact on Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
He added that Ukraine’s total defense needs for the current year amount to approximately €136 billion.
In contrast, the Ukrainian budget covers only about €53 billion.
gap in defense needs
Fedorov explained that Ukraine is slated to receive approximately €28.3 billion for defense purposes this year
from the €90 billion EU loan. However, significant funding needs remain unmet.
He noted that resources from the European Peace Facility could represent one of the most impactful European contributions.
This is possible if directed toward areas that yield the quickest military returns.
Efforts to expand international support
These demands come as Kyiv reports a slowdown in Russian advances on some fronts.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue to launch counterattacks and target supply lines inside Russia.
In a related development, the Ukrainian Defense Minister is seeking
an additional $20 billion in military funding from the Contact Group on Ukraine’s Defense.
This is in addition to previous pledges of $40 billion, aimed at bolstering military capabilities in the coming phase.
