Beijing, China – China and Canada announced an agreement to establish a strategic dialogue mechanism and resume political and security consultations between the two countries.
This move aims to strengthen bilateral relations and expand areas of cooperation.
First visit in 10 years
The China Foreign Ministry, in a statement carried by Xinhua News Agency, said the agreement was reached during talks
between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, in Ottawa.
This visit marks the first official visit by a Chinese foreign minister to Canada in nearly a decade.
It reflects the desire of both sides to revitalize political and diplomatic communication channels after years of strained relations.
During the talks, both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue and strengthening cooperation on issues of common concern.
This contributes to the stability and development of bilateral relations.
Strengthening political and security communication
Under the agreement, a new mechanism for strategic dialogue between the two countries will be launched.
Political and security consultations, which had been suspended in recent years, will also resume,
with the aim of addressing bilateral issues and enhancing mutual trust.
This development comes as China and Canada seek to rebuild diplomatic relations.
Furthermore, they aim to improve cooperation in political, economic,
and security fields amidst rapidly changing international and regional dynamics.
Observers believe the agreement signals a potential breakthrough in Sino-Canadian relations.
This is particularly evident with the resumption of high-level official meetings and the reopening of
direct channels of dialogue between the two sides after a period of political and diplomatic stagnation.
