Taipei, Taiwan – In a move signaling escalating military tensions in the Taiwan Strait, Joseph Wu, secretary-general of Taiwan’s National Security Council, announced that Taipei was forced to dispatch warships and fighter jets to monitor a “combat readiness joint patrol” launched by China around the island.
This is the second such patrol observed by Taiwanese authorities in just one week, reflecting a continued increase in China’s military presence around the island.
Intensive monitoring of Chinese air movements
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense confirmed in a statement released late Monday that it had detected intensive activity by 21 Chinese military aircraft, including advanced J-16 fighter jets and drones, operating in the vicinity of the island. These developments come amid heightened alert in Taipei in anticipation of any sudden hostile actions. This heightened alert follows the talks held by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, in Beijing earlier this month, during which the sensitive issue of Taiwan was discussed.
Taiwanese condemnation: “China is the source of instability”
In a scathing commentary on these developments, Joseph Wu, writing on the X platform on Tuesday, described China’s behavior as “unjustifiable,” asserting that “China is the sole source of instability in the Indo-Pacific region.”
This statement comes at a time of increasing military pressure from Beijing, which is deploying warships and fighter jets around the island almost daily.
The struggle for sovereignty and regional security
China considers democratic Taiwan an integral part of its territory and has vowed to take control, by force if necessary. Taipei’s government, for its part, categorically rejects Beijing’s claims of sovereignty and insists that the island’s fate can only be decided by its people.
This recurring confrontation reveals the deep geopolitical divide between the two sides. Taiwan remains on constant alert to counter China’s strategy of imposing a military fait accompli. This comes amid growing international concern that this show of force could lead to an unintended clash, potentially threatening security and stability across the entire Asia-Pacific region.
