Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan discussed the latest and rapidly evolving developments in the Middle East region in a telephone call on Tuesday with his Kuwaiti counterpart, Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the two ministers discussed the current situation and emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination and mutual consultation on these matters to serve the security of the region.
This diplomatic move comes just two days after Riyadh announced that its air defenses had successfully intercepted and destroyed three explosive-laden drones that had penetrated the Kingdom’s airspace from Iraqi territory. At the time, Saudi Arabia affirmed its full right to respond at a time and place of its choosing to protect its security and sovereignty.
In a related development, the call coincided with the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry’s announcement a week earlier that it had thwarted an infiltration attempt by members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard into its territory, following an armed clash with army forces. Despite Tehran’s denials and its insistence on its policy of respecting the sovereignty of neighboring countries, the incident underscored the need to enhance coordination between Riyadh and Kuwait.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other Arab states were subjected to a series of drone and missile attacks. This came as part of Tehran’s military response to US and Israeli operations against it, which lasted from February 28 until the ceasefire agreement came into effect on April 8.
Although Iran declared at the time that its strikes targeted only “American interests and bases,” many of these attacks hit civilian facilities and vital Gulf sites. They also resulted in casualties and significant material losses, which Arab capitals strongly condemned and opposed. They demanded an immediate end to the attacks to prevent the region from sliding into wider escalation.
