Berlin, Germany – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz asserted that Russia has chosen a path of escalation following the recent attacks targeting the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

This statement came in reference to the intense strikes that have taken place on Ukrainian territory in recent hours.

German condemnation of the attacks

The German Chancellor stated that the recent Russian strikes reflect

a trend toward further military escalation rather than de-escalation.

He emphasized that targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure

further complicates the crisis and threatens security and stability in Europe.

He added that Berlin is following developments on the ground in Ukraine with grave concern.

He also stressed the need to halt the attacks and work to prevent the conflict from spreading further in the region.

Continued support for Ukraine

The German Chancellor reiterated his country’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russian attacks.

He also explained that Germany would continue coordinating with its European and Western allies to provide Kyiv

with the necessary assistance at the political, economic, and security levels.

He noted that a unified European stance remains crucial in addressing the crisis.

He also emphasized the importance of continued international pressure

aimed at pushing Moscow toward de-escalation and a return to the diplomatic track.

Escalation of military operations

The German Chancellor’s remarks come at a time of significant escalation in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Drone and missile attacks on several Ukrainian cities have intensified,

amid European and international warnings about the repercussions of continued military operations on regional and international security.

Ukrainian authorities had previously announced that Kyiv and other areas had been subjected to widespread attacks.

These attacks have resulted in deaths, injuries, and damage to infrastructure,

while Moscow maintains that its military operations are continuing in accordance with its stated objectives.
