Amman – Jordan has renewed its call for fair and sustainable international funding for refugee-host countries, emphasizing that persistent humanitarian crises in the region require the international community to take greater responsibility. The Kingdom stressed that host nations should not be left to tackle economic and service challenges in isolation, especially given the accumulated financial and social burdens over the years.
Mounting Pressure on Core Sectors
Jordan’s demands were presented during the Kingdom’s delegation participation in the “Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean” (PAM) meetings. Officials highlighted that hosting vast numbers of refugees has placed unprecedented pressure on infrastructure and basic services. The delegation noted that these pressures span vital sectors—including healthcare, education, energy, and water—alongside labor market challenges, necessitating a genuine international partnership beyond “temporary aid.”
Innovative Funding and Social Sustainability
Jordan called for the adoption of more equitable funding mechanisms to ensure a balanced distribution of burdens, noting that refugee issues are now a global matter linked to international security and stability. Furthermore, the delegation underscored the importance of supporting “Local Host Communities” and enhancing development programs to create jobs, ensuring social and economic stability is maintained while protecting the developmental gains of host nations.
Jordan as a Model of Humanitarian Responsibility
Jordan remains one of the world’s largest refugee-hosting countries relative to its population, primarily hosting Syrian refugees. Despite stifling economic challenges, the Kingdom continues to fulfill its humanitarian role with high responsibility, amidst repeated calls for the international community and UN agencies to increase financial and technical support to enable the state to continue providing essential services to both refugees and citizens.
