Brussels – Transatlantic trade relations have entered a “state of alarm” as the European Commission announced it is keeping all options on the table to respond to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs on European auto imports. Obviously, by May 2026, Brussels is no longer relying solely on “soft diplomacy”; it has begun drafting “proportionate response” scenarios to protect the backbone of the Continent’s industry, especially as the automotive sector has become a direct target of new American protectionist policies.

Commission sources clarified that the European response will not be haphazard but will include robust countermeasures if U.S. threats are executed.
