Oslo, Norway – The Nobel Peace Prize Committee on Saturday called on Iranian authorities to immediately release Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi so she can receive urgent medical care. The committee warned that her life could be in danger if she continues to be denied proper treatment.
The committee confirmed that information from Mohammadi’s lawyers
and family members indicates a serious deterioration in her health.
It also stressed that the Iranian authorities bear full responsibility for her safety.
Severe health deterioration
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation announced that she was urgently transferred from prison to
a hospital in northwestern Iran after suffering what it described as a “catastrophic deterioration” in her health.
This included two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe heart attack.
The foundation explained that Mohammadi fainted twice inside her prison in Zanjan.
It added that medical reports suggest she suffered a heart attack in late March.
Allegations of medical negligence
The organization stated that her transfer to the hospital came
after approximately 140 days of “systematic medical neglect” since her arrest last December.
This occurred despite previous recommendations that she be treated by her own specialized medical team in Tehran.
Her lawyers indicated that her condition appeared to have deteriorated significantly,
as she had lost a considerable amount of weight.
She required assistance to walk, reflecting the seriousness of her health condition in recent times.
Concerns about delayed treatment
For their part, Narges Mohammadi family confirmed that her transfer to the hospital came
at the “last minute,” warning that it might not be enough to save her condition.
Her legal representative in France, Shirin Ardakani, also reported that she had previously been denied access to her cardiologist.
She added that visits from her lawyers were conducted under strict supervision by prison officials.
International calls continue for Iranian authorities to intervene urgently to ensure Mohammadi receives
the necessary medical care, amid growing concerns about her health.
