Cairo, Egypt – His Excellency Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, praised the Kingdom of Spain’s honorable stances on the Palestinian cause.
He also commended Madrid’s continued commitment to the principles of international law and justice
and its advocacy for the rights of the Palestinian people in international forums.
This came during the first-of-its-kind meeting held between the Arab Parliament delegation, headed by Al Yamahi,
and the Spanish parliamentary delegation on the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings in Istanbul, Turkey.
Al Yamahi emphasized that the Spanish position serves as a model to be emulated in
upholding humanitarian and legal values in support of just Arab causes.
Historical ties and sustainable partnerships
The Speaker of the Arab Parliament explained that the ties binding the Arab states to the Kingdom of Spain
are deep-rooted historical relations based on mutual respect and shared interests between the Arab and Spanish peoples.
Al-Yamahi expressed his strong desire to expand this cooperation to broader institutional horizons.
This would be achieved through efforts to sign a formal memorandum of understanding
between the Arab Parliament and its Spanish counterpart,
comprising both the Senate and the Congress of Deputies.
He also affirmed that the coming period would witness an intensification of reciprocal visits
to exchange legislative expertise and strengthen joint parliamentary work.
All of this serves the developmental and political interests of both sides.
Madrid reaffirms its stance towards the Palestinians
For his part, Javier Maroto, head of the Spanish parliamentary delegation, expressed his country’s pride in its growing relations with the Arab world.
He added that he affirms the Spanish Parliament’s commitment to building effective bridges of communication
with the Arab Parliament as a unifying platform for Arab popular representation.
Maroto emphasized that Spain’s supportive stance on the Palestinian cause remains steadfast
and unwavering, stemming from a comprehensive vision that supports
all the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with international law.
Furthermore, he noted the importance of joint parliamentary coordination to address current regional challenges.
Parliamentary cooperation in international forums
The meeting addressed the importance of unifying visions between Arab and European parliaments, particularly the Spanish Parliament,
within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other UN organizations.
Both sides also agreed on the necessity of establishing permanent
channels of communication to facilitate closer understanding on strategic issues.
They emphasized that parliamentary cooperation represents a soft power capable of promoting stability
and disseminating the values of dialogue and peace in the Mediterranean region.
This, in turn, would positively impact the security and prosperity of the peoples of both the Arab and European regions.
