South Darfur, Sudan – Humanitarian and medical reports have warned of an outbreak of malnutrition and measles among thousands of displaced people in Kalma camp in South Darfur state. This comes amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions and a severe shortage of food and healthcare services.
Medical sources working inside the camp reported a significant increase in cases of acute malnutrition, particularly among children and women. In addition, a rise in measles cases has been recorded, raising fears of an epidemic outbreak within the overcrowded camps for displaced people.
Humanitarian reports confirm that living conditions inside Kalma camp have become increasingly dire with the growing number of displaced people fleeing conflict zones in Darfur. This has placed immense pressure on the already limited health and relief services.
Humanitarian workers indicate that shortages of food, clean water, and vaccines pose a direct threat to the lives of thousands of children in the camp. They have called for urgent intervention to provide medical and food supplies and prevent the crisis from worsening.
Kalma camp is one of the largest camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Darfur region. It shelters tens of thousands of people fleeing the ongoing conflict in the area, amid warnings from international organizations that the continued deterioration of the humanitarian situation could lead to a widespread health catastrophe.
Aid organizations have urged the international community to act swiftly to support humanitarian efforts in Darfur. They stressed the urgent need to provide essential assistance to save the lives of the displaced, particularly children who are at risk of malnutrition and infectious diseases.
