Hanoi, Vietnam – Typhoon Boalui made landfall in north-central Vietnam in the early hours of Monday.

This caused damage to homes and damaged electricity networks, and at least 11 people died and 17 were considered missing.

The local meteorological agency reported that before making landfall, the hurricane moved along the country’s coast for several hours.

Causing waves up to eight meters high.

State media said that 11 people died after being stuck in floodwaters in the city of Hue.

While 12 fishermen were considered missing after strong waves sank four fishing boats off Quang Tri Province.

The government evacuated more than 28,500 people before the hurricane arrived.

While hundreds of flights were canceled or postponed with the closure of four airports in the central regions.

The typhoon has brought heavy rains to most parts of Vietnam since Saturday.

The authorities warned of the risk of severe floods and landslides.

The Meteorological Agency reported that rainfall in several parts of the country is expected to reach 500 millimeters from Sunday night until Tuesday.

Vietnam is vulnerable to hurricanes thanks to its long coastline facing the South China Sea.

Hurricanes often form in the eastern Philippines, where at least 10 people died after the typhoon struck last week.
