Madrid, Spain – Spain is in shock and grief following one of the deadliest rail accidents in its modern history. Authorities in the Andalusia region announced this morning that the death toll from the collision of two high-speed trains near the town of Adamoz in the province of Córdoba has risen to at least 39. Dozens more were injured in the accident.
Details of the double collision
According to initial information from authorities, the horrific accident occurred at 7:39 PM Spanish time, as a result of a series of events. A train belonging to the private company Aero, traveling from Malaga to Madrid with 317 passengers on board, suddenly derailed in its last three carriages. Preliminary investigations indicate that the derailed carriages slid onto the adjacent track at the same moment. At that time, another train belonging to the state-owned company Renfe, heading towards Huelva, was passing through, resulting in an indirect collision between the two trains. As a result, the second train also derailed.
complex rescue operations
Images from the scene showed extensive damage to several vehicles, amidst challenging and complex terrain. This hampered rescue efforts. Spanish authorities mobilized a large number of teams, including the Civil Guard, firefighters, and civil protection units, along with medical teams from several provinces. Medical sources confirmed that the injured were transported to hospitals in Cordoba, Seville, and Malaga. They indicated that approximately 30 of the injured were in critical condition. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to ensure no one is missing.
Transportation paralyzed and urgent investigations launched.
Following the accident, the Spanish Ministry of Transport immediately suspended train service on the strategic line connecting Madrid and Andalusia. The decision caused widespread disruption for thousands of passengers. Emergency plans were activated to provide alternative transportation. Meanwhile, judicial and technical authorities launched urgent investigations to determine the precise cause of the first train’s derailment. There are growing questions about safety standards on high-speed rail lines. Everyone is awaiting an official report that will identify those responsible and reveal the circumstances surrounding this tragedy that has shaken the nation.
