Yakutsk, Russia – A severe cold wave has hit the Russian region of Yakutia, with temperatures in some areas plummeting below -50°C. This has resulted in thick, icy fog covering the streets, causing near-zero visibility.
The severe weather conditions brought traffic to a standstill. Local authorities announced the closure of schools in Yakutsk, switching primary and secondary school students to distance learning.
Despite the harsh weather, many locals enjoyed their outings. They described the traditional Yakutian frost with no wind as “wonderful weather,” according to RIA Novosti.
Some residents are following a traditional practice of dousing themselves with cold water while standing in the snow. Meanwhile, vendors at the open-air market are exchanging tips on how to stay warm, such as drinking hot tea and moving around frequently. They also advise wearing warm, appropriate clothing for the bitter cold.
