Moscow, Russia – Russia has submitted a new draft resolution to the UN Security Council aimed at achieving peace in Gaza. This comes as a direct alternative to a US draft resolution that has caused widespread division within the Council.
The Russian draft resolution emphasizes a comprehensive ceasefire and guarantees the unhindered passage of humanitarian aid. It also calls for the initiation of a serious political process that ensures the rights and protection of civilians, moving beyond vague language that allows military operations to continue.
The resolution also stresses the need for all parties to abide by international law. It rejects any unilateral actions that could escalate tensions on the ground, and calls for a broader UN role in monitoring the implementation of the ceasefire.
Observers believe the Russian move reflects a growing desire within the Security Council to propose balanced alternatives, especially given the setbacks to the American draft resolution, which faced objections due to the lack of clear provisions mandating an immediate cessation of hostilities.
The outcome of the vote remains uncertain. This comes amid international divisions over mechanisms for ending the war and launching a genuine peace process that would put an end to the suffering of civilians in Gaza.
