Europe – The former Secretary General of NATO stated that the alliance will not engage in a third world war over Ukraine. He emphasized that member states are fully aware of the dangers of sliding into a direct confrontation with Russia.
He explained in media statements that support for Kyiv would continue politically and militarily. However, this would be within limits that would not lead to a full-blown conflict threatening international security or plunging the world into widespread chaos.
He added that the goal of NATO’s current policy is to deter Moscow and contain the Russian threat. The goal is not to enter into a global conflict with uncontrollable consequences.
He noted that the alliance is keen to maintain a balance between supporting Ukraine and protecting global peace. He added that any miscalculation could ignite a direct confrontation between the major nuclear powers, something everyone is trying to avoid.
