Texas, USA – The repercussions of Zahran Mamdani’s victory in the New York state election began early, following a statement that sparked widespread controversy within the United States, from Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
He announced that he intends to impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to the state from New York.
This comes after the election day results saw candidate Mamdani win the race for mayor of New York.
Texas will not be a haven
Abbott said in a tweet on his X (formerly Twitter) account that Texas will not be
a “haven for voters who caused the collapse of their city and
then seek to repeat the experience in other states.”
Referring to New York’s strict tax and housing policies.
He added: “We will not allow their problems to be transferred to us…
We will impose double fees on them if they try to come.”
The Republican governor’s remarks come amid escalating controversy
between Texas and New York over internal migration within the United States.
Texas is experiencing a large influx of residents seeking
better job opportunities and a lower cost of living.
Political tension escalates
Analysts believe that Abbott statement reflects the escalating political tension
between Republicans and Democrats following the recent election results.
Texas is a Republican stronghold, while New York is a center of Democratic influence.
Observers predicted that Abbott remarks would become the focus of
a national debate on state policies and internal immigration.
Especially as the popularity of some major cities continues
to decline due to taxes and high living costs.
