Cairo, Egypt – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty confirmed that negotiations regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) have reached a dead end after more than 14 years of dialogue. He acknowledged Cairo’s good faith but indicated that Egypt’s patience has run out.
In a televised interview on the program “Happening in Egypt” on MBC Egypt, Abdel-Aty explained that his country reserves its full right to defend itself, its interests, and its water security if it is harmed in any way. He emphasized that water security is an integral part of Egyptian national security.
The minister stressed that the UN Charter grants states the right to defend themselves when their security is threatened. He described the Ethiopian actions as an existential threat to Egypt that cannot be tolerated.
In a related context, Abdel-Aati announced that the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden member states reject Ethiopia’s attempts to impose its will or seek access to the maritime corridor by force, warning that such practices could lead to chaos in the African continent.
