Washington, DC – Controversy has intensified within the US Congress following the introduction of preliminary plans to reduce the number of American troops deployed in Eastern Europe. Several Republican lawmakers have announced their strong opposition to the move, asserting that it could weaken Washington’s position vis-à-vis Moscow and jeopardize the security of its allies.

The lawmakers stressed that a continued strong military presence in Europe is a key pillar in deterring Russia, especially given the rising tensions in the east of the continent, noting that any withdrawal or reduction would be interpreted as a sign of weakness on the part of the United States.

Some senators explained that Eastern Europe is NATO’s first line of defense. Retreating now gives the Kremlin an opportunity to expand and increase Russian influence.

For its part, the US Department of Defense stated that the discussion is still in its early stages. Any adjustment to troop size will take into account the balance between defense commitments and US strategic priorities around the world.
